STUDENT CAMPUS LIFE

Grading System.
Grading system in BEST is done on the GPA system as follows:
Average undergraduate grades for BEST students range between 3.25-3.75, very good work will merit a B. Only in exceptional cases will A’s be awarded.
Examinations: – Students must take exams. Students may resit if they get score less than 60%. No resit grade will be marked higher than a “C”. Students allowed to miss an exams for compassionate reasons, must take exams within one week of the original date.
Academic Warning: If the Average grade for Certificate and Diploma students falls below 2.0 and Degree students fall below 2.5, the student will be automatically given a letter of Academic warning by the Academic Dean. If the student continually fails to make up, the student will be opened to two options.
1). The academic Dean would review the student’s status of classification. This means, the student’s status may be down-graded. (for example, a degree student may loose the status and be classified as a Diploma student and a Diploma student may be reverted to a certificate student.
2). The Academic Dean may ask the student to withdraw from school.
Plagiarism:- Plagiarism is the use of someone’s words and ideas without acknowledgement. Plagiarism is prohibited and it is a serious academic offence that will be disciplined. Hence, students are advised to acknowledge people’s ideas and words that they use in all assignments and term papers.
Absences
Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled. Even when a student misses a class, he or she is responsible for all the academic work missed. A student may not miss more than six class hours during a semester. Absences must be approved by the teacher in each course. In the case of an emergency or ill health, a student can be absent from class without advance notice but must have someone notify the teachers within 24hours. An absence is an absence, meaning that even those caused by medical emergencies will be counted toward the six allowed class period absences. Note that absences are measured by hours and not by days. If a student is absent from class on a day where the class meets for three hours, he or she has missed three of the six allowed.
Tardiness
Tardiness is disruptive to the programmes of BEST. Students are to make every effort to be on time to class. If for some reason the student has to be late, the teacher should be informed ahead of time. Being late to class 3times for any reason will be considered as an absence.
Phones
Telephones are not allowed in classes. If you must have your phone with you, it should be turned off completely. A teacher will send a student out of class whose phone rings or who is found manipulating his or her phone. When a student is sent out of class, he will be marked as absent. Class periods are strictly for teaching and studying.
Withdrawal from school
A student may desire to withdraw from BEST either temporarily or permanently. The reasons for this withdrawal must be deemed necessary by the school administration. Thus, the student will need to seek permission in writing through the office of the Academic Dean. The application should contain reasons for the withdrawal.
Temporal withdrawal
In the case of a temporal withdrawal, the student should indicate when he plans to return to complete the programme. A written application for reinstatement to the school is required.
Terminal withdrawal
A student may choose to withdraw permanently or be asked by the school to withdraw. This decision will be necessary when it is deemed that continuation is practically, morally, spiritually, or academically impossible. A student who is so discharged may not seek to resume at a later date. The only option for such a student is to reapply afresh. It should be noted though, that a student discharged by BEST on a permanent basis is not likely to be readmitted based on a fresh application, unless there is very clear evidence of change in the situation that led to the dismissal.
Absences from Exams
No excuse will be given to a student who fails to show up for an examination unless his or her absence is for verifiable health reasons. In that case he or she will make a written request to the teacher in which he or she explains the reason for the absence. When approved, the teacher and the student must agree on when the exam should be taken and the dean informed. For regularly scheduled exams, a student may not take the exam more than a week before the scheduled date must make a written request to the Dean.
Grading system
Grades will be reported to the students in writing by the office of the Academic Dean. A student is not to request an oral report of grades from the Dean or from teachers. Students who would fail a course because of receiving a failing grade on a final examination may write a second examination. Students who do not receive a high enough grade in the second examination to pass the course will fail the course. Courses in which a student fails (having a final score below 60%) will be repeated or replaced by another course in the same area. This must be approved by the Academic committee. Note though, that if you replace a failed course with another course, the grade of the new course along with the failed grade will be figured into your total GPA. If the failed course is repeated, the failed grade will be replaced by the new grade. In case, whether the course is repeated replaced, the failed course will be listed in the transcript, even if it is not figured into the GPA.
The following grading scale is followed at BEST in evaluating course work.

Academic dishonesty
Any form of academic dishonesty, for example, cheating in an examination, plagiarism etc. must be reported in writing to the academic office by the teacher, and there will be disciplinary actions for such matters.
Cheating in an examination
When a student cheats in an examination, a 0 will be giving for that exam or any part of the course requirements where the cheating occurs. Additionally, the student caught cheating will be sent for academic counseling by their academic advisor.
Projects/Thesis: All Certificate and Diploma students are required to write doctrinal statements while all B.A or Degree students must write a thesis. Writing a thesis is a long process and cannot be completed by a student in one or two months. When a student is writing a thesis, he/she is assigned a supervisor and the student has one academic year to complete the thesis.
Before the thesis topic is considered, the student must write a proposal to the Academic Dean who will then assign a faulty member to act as the student’s supervisor.
The supervisor will help clarify the research question to be addressed by the thesis, organization and development of the thesis and make other suggestions. The student must ensure that the thesis topic is original.
A thesis that repeats a previous BEST student’s thesis will be declared invalid, regardless of the stage of its progress on library research and /or field research.
All students who conduct a field research thesis will receive approval of the questionnaires from their supervisors before copying and distributing them in the field. It is the students responsible to check from the academic Dean’s office if he/she has completed the course load for his/her entire program. No student will be allowed to graduate if he/she has not met all academic and course requirements.
Transcript:- Every student is entitled to semester Reports every end of semester, but the Final and official transcript will only be given by the end of their studies. In case of any request for an official transcript before graduation day, the student will need to pay 7000frs for it but after graduation students will pay 5000frs for their transcripts.
