COURSE OBJECTIVES

English languages

This course provides students with English skills to expressing themselves in writing and spoken English. It is meant to help students grasp the root aspects of English grammar.

Objectives.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to

1.Understand the rudiments of English grammar.

2.Increase vocabulary for easy comprehension and writing

3.Acquire all skills needed to write a publishable academic paper.

NT Survey

          This course is a survey of the NT canon. (Introduction, content and the theology of each book). Students are also to be taught on working knowledge of the socio-political, and religions contexts of the inter-testament and New Testament periods.

Objectives

By the end of the course students should be able to:-

1.Understand NT Survey with special emphasis on the person and work of Christ.

2.Develop confidence in teaching and preaching from the NT with application to Christianity in Africa (African context).

OT Survey

          This course in a survey of the entire OT canon designed to help students to understand the introduction, basic content and theology of each book. In addition the student will have to understand the near eastern backgrounds and overview of OT history.

Objectives

Students by the end of the course should be able to:

1.Present a colorant survey of the OT with a dynamic understanding on how the OT foreshadows the person and work of Christ.

2. Develop confidence in teaching or preaching from the OT with application to Christianity in Africa.

Spiritual Formation

This course will provide a biblical understanding of salvation, spiritual growth and spiritual Disciplines.

Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to

  1. understand the essentials of spiritual formation that lead to deep and personal walk with God. (Intimacy with God, and spiritual growth/Development)
  2. Engage in spiritual disciplines through individual practices and small group participation.
  3. Lead a small group of Bible studies within and outside community.

Evangelism and Discipleship

          This course is meant to teach the importance of evangelism and discipleship. The aim is to help students understand the connection between evangelism and discipleship in Christian ministry. An overview of missions history is given.

Objectives

  1. To understand the biblical roots of evangelism and discipleship.
  2. Gain experience in evangelism and discipleship.
  3. The different principle and methods required to apply to contemporary mission activities
  4. Use knowledge acquired for personal and Church growth.

Introduction to counseling

This course is meant to investigate the biblical process of counseling with special insight from the example of Christ and the teachings of the epistles and counseling techniques and principles to apply to current issues within the Church.

Objectives

  1. Understand the basic skills needed for helping those with spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physical needs.
  2. Use the scripture more effectively in counseling
  3. Counsel other students, applying listening, probing and empathic skills.

 

Church History

          This course is a survey of the origin, development, growth and spread of Christianity from the day of Pentecost, to reformation, to contemporary movements in the Church. Students should be able to identify theological and ecclesiological issues that the Church grappled with.

Objectives:- By the end of this course, students should

  1. Understand the historical and socio-religious backgrounds affecting the spread of the Christian Faith.
  2. Learn and discern various factors that contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and practices in major periods of Church history.
  3. Interpret present development of doctrine and practice in contemporary Church movements based upon the knowledge of the Church history.

Pentateuch:- This course is meant to introduce the issues of authorship, unity and the creation accounts of the Pentateuch, the message, theme and theology of the books of Pentateuch. The narrative and original historic –cultural contexts is very important.

Objectives

          By the end of this course, students should be able to:-

  1. Deal with the stances of critical scholarship of the Pentateuch
  2. Understand its place in redemptive history, appreciate its coherence and the entire message and themes.
  3. Understand skills in Biblical narrative text
  4. Draw up the theological, ethical and spiritual implications by the Pentateuch text.

Research & Writing:-

This course is meant to expose students to theories of research, purpose, approaches (biblical, theological, psychological, missiological and educational) and other types of research and the entire overview of the research process. Few methods of research are to be emphasized.

Objectives:-

Students by the end of the course should be able to:

  1. Know the basic theories of research methods and approaches.
  2. Use different types of research
  3. Develop a proposal- style term paper based on the research interest of the individual student and the student’s department of study.
  4. Acquire skills using research to shape positively the home, Church, school and society.

Greek 1

          This course begins with the study of the Greek alphabet, Morphology, pronunciation, grammatical terms and constructions. The aim is to help students build a New Testament Greek vocabulary, grammatical forms and acquire skills for reading New Testament Greek with understanding.

Objectives

By the end of course, students should be acquainted with phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary.

  1. Have acquired basic skills in Greek exegesis for in-depth refection on the New Testament.
  2. Utilize New Testament Greek exegesis tools for spiritual enrichment and productive ministry

ATR- African Traditional Religion

          This course is aimed at evaluating and examining beliefs and practices of the African Traditional Religions and other major non –Christian religions biblically in relation to the following: God, man, sin, salvation, the spirit world and the African mindset and other non-Christian world views.

Objectives:

By the end of this course students should:-

  1. Be aware and understand the basic issues in ATR and its world view.
  2. Be able to take a biblical position on mystical powers in ATR.
  3. Know how to relate to people of other religions and consciously influence their communities positively for Christ.

Systematic Theology

          This course studies the fundamental doctrines of the Christian Church from the conservative Baptist standpoint, that is the doctrines of Bibliology, Theology proper,

Soteriology, Christology, pneumatology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology, Angelology, Anthropology.

Objectives

  1. Articulate and guard Christian doctrine
  2. Be able to appreciate biblical foundations of the Baptist position and distinguish divisions from it.
  3. Explain the basic content of each doctrine from historical and biblical perspectives.

Pastoral Counseling

          This course investigates the biblical process of counseling with special insight from the example of Christ and the teaching of the epistles. Attention is focused on counseling techniques for the Pastor within the local Church and Principles are applied to current issue, within the Church.

Objectives:- By the end of this course, students will be able to.

Greek II

This course focuses on Greek Grammar and Syntax. The aim is to help students read New Testament Greek and interpretation.

Course Objectives.

By the end of this course:

  1. Build a working knowledge of the elements of New Testament Greek
  2. Do Greek exegesis for in-depth reflection on the New Testament Scriptures
  3. Employ New Testament Greek exegesis as a tool for spiritual enrichment and productive ministry.

Philosophy:

This course focuses on the foundational tools for critical thinking. I t helps students to understand the major philosophical schools of thoughts, essential elements in logic and argumentation ethics, metaphysics and philosophy of religions. The student will also be introduced to Christian perspectives on philosophical reflection.

Objectives:

By the end of this course students should.

  1. Know the rudiments of philosophy and philosophical reflection.
  2. Have understood the basic skills in critical and logical thinking and argumentation
  3. Have developed disciplined, Systematic and consistent ways of critically engaging the issues of life and faith biblically and theologically.

Prophetic Books

          This course focuses on the content, message, themes and theology of prophetic books. Students are to pay attention to the historical purpose in their original historical and cultural context and their place in redemptive history.

Objectives: By the end students should:

  1. Understand the content, theologies and ethical issues addressed by each prophetic book.
  2. Have the competence in genre recognition on prophetic literature, be able to read and understand their teachings.
  3. Be able to draw inspiration from Hebrew prophets and be able to become prophetic voices within the communities in which they live and minister.

Homiletics

          This course focuses on the procedure for preaching through a biblical book as a unit, including the planning and presentation of series of sermons on a biblical book. The aim is to help the students bring out the biblical theology of a biblical book.

Objectives:

By the end, students should be able to

  1. Present sound biblical messages that are educative, heart warning and thought provoking.
  2. Use the skills in tackling heresies
  3. Study each book of the Bible indepth

Hermeneutics

          This course focuses on the essential component of biblical interpretation from an exegetical standpoint and on a methodical approach to reading the Bible. the aim is to help the students determine the meaning of the biblical text as sacred scripture for today and develop skills in interpreting the Bible.

Objectives:

By the end students should:-

  1. Grasp the history of biblical interpretation and acquire skills and competence in interpreting the Bible.
  2. Develop life principles from Bible reading and interpretation.
  3. Be transformed by the teaching of the whole Bible with the understanding of its place as the centerpiece of the Christian ministry.

Internship

          This practical aspect of ministry is focused on expositing the students to some theological and biblical issues in the society. The aim is to give the students the opportunity to experience the challenge in the scripture. This experience should last at least three months for two years making up a total of six months before graduation.

Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will have:

  1. To gain experience and deeper understanding of what has been learnt in the course.
  2. Be able to handle issues biblically and contextually in the church and the community.

Missions

          This course gives an introduction into God’s redemptive purpose and activities as revealed to Israel in the OT and to the Church in NT. It aims to expose students to Israel’s responsibility of missions to the nations as well as the parallel responsibility of the Church to the entire world. It covers an introduction to contextualization which is necessary for every missiologist.

Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student will:-

  1. Have grasped a unified mission perspective of the whole canon of the old and New Testaments.
  2. Be able to explain how God initiated his mission for the salvation of humankind and the entire created order through major historical events.
  3. Be motivated by sound and holistic, theological and biblical foundation for mission and evangelism.
  4. Understand the biblical basis, the assumption and methodologies that characterize contextual theologies.

Worship and Liturgy:

          This course will deal with aspects of worship in the local Church and also with practical learning of music (instruments like keyboard, guitar, etc).

Techniques for leading worship, songs will also be emphasized. Consideration will be given to African Christian music and its cultural context for the Urban and rural Church.

Objectives:

  1. To understand how music, worship and liturgy promote the worship of God.
  2. Be spiritually challenged to be a lifelong worshiper.
  3. Be skilled song leaders
  4. Be able to promote the use of African musical instruments in worship in a more modern way.

Biblical Theology:

          This course focuses on the history and development of Biblical theology as a discipline and its contemporary problems and challenges. The aim is to help the student explore the various approaches used in determining the relationship between the Old and New Testaments with the view of classifying their meaning and message for today.

Objectives:

  1. To be able to reflect New biblical data theologically.
  2. Be able to constructively apply the results of theological study of the Bible in addressing the contemporary problems or issues of a given community.
  3. To develop a contextually suitable and effectively transformational approach of engaging the Bible theologically.

World Religions / Cults

          This course is an introductory study of the historical and theological development as well as the philosophy behind world religions and cults.

 Attention is given to beliefs and practices and the strategies against Christianity as a background for simulating evangelism and Christian apologetics.

Objectives

  1. To understand the theologies and philosophies of world religions and cults.
  2. Understand the culture of these cults, beliefs and practices and strategies against Christianity.
  3. Stimulate students to evangelize and pursue Christian apologetics in their community.

Anthropology/Sociology:

          This course focuses on theories of culture and its implication to the presentation of the gospel. The aim is to help the student pay attention to the process of cultural formation, society belief systems, values, customs and rituals, and how the gospel of Jesus Christ can be employed to bring about total transformation to the cultural man or woman in the society.

Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the significance of Anthropology in missions and the theories of culture, society and worldview.
  2. Be able to recognize societal cultural values, belief systems, and their impact on the presentation of the gospel in the society.
  3. Be able to relate the course in future ministry in the society.

Christian Ethics:

          This course seeks to lay the foundation for Christian and biblical Ethics. The aim is to help students grasp the role of philosophy in the development of Christian theology and western civilization and its ethics and to comprehend the twin perspectives of traditional African and Western moral and ethical values.

Objectives:

  1. To enable students be aware of the various philosophical ethical systems and approaches as well as significant role Christian ethical values play in the society.
  2. Have acquired the skills for encountering and for evaluating ethical questions from a biblical (theistic) standpoint.
  3. Be able to integrate Christian ethics into public discourse in order to bring wholesome ethical values in the public arena.

Thesis Project:

          This is a supervised research work on biblical or theological  practical issues of interest involving the Church or society.

          The student engages in independent research while being guided by his/her thesis supervisor. The thesis should seek to contribute in some way to better understanding of the topic chosen, and its significance to the Church.

          Thesis should meet up a scholarly standard without any form of plagiarism and should be 70 pages maximum and 40 pages minimum in five chapters maximum.

The Christian Home:

          This course seeks to give a deeper understanding of family and relationship in areas such as friendship, courtship, wedding, honeymoon and other issues that relate to marriage. The aim of this course is to enable students understand the biblical view of the home, cultural problems affecting home life, and being able to deal with issues like extended family responsibilities and relationships, communication and familial roles within society and parenting

          Attention should be focused on premarital and marital counseling and peculiar family problems, challenges or issues, which Pastors, missionaries and other Christian leaders face.

Objectives:

By the end of this course students should

  1. Have a fundamental understanding of biblical foundation of the Christian home.
    2. Acquire skills of counseling to individuals, families, fellowship groups, Churches and other groups on biblical teaching on marriage and family.
  2. Be able to differentiate between what is biblical marriage, and cultural assumptions in marriage and home life.
  3. Have a better understanding of choice, sexuality, parenting, communication, etc, in marriage.

5. Have developed a life long family ministry.

Church Administration

          This course focuses on Biblical philosophy of Administration and management, with basic principles in application to the Church. Politics and constitution of the Baptist and other major denominations is very important to this study. Students are to be taught financial principles, accountability, budgeting, fiscal.
